Family Misfortunes (7th Place)(GvC 2018)

Last Saturday was Gaming Vs Cancer, a yearly collection of tournaments held for charity in Southampton. The Netrunner Tournament is random IDs handed out when tickets are bought. The idea being that you’ll either get a tier A and C or two Tier B (with the caveat that trying to tier IDs for such a tournament is a challenge). This year my IDs where The Outfit: Family Owned and Operated and Nero. I love Weyland and I hadn’t played The Outfit yet so happy days. As for Nero, I enjoy a bit of Criminal and I hadn't played much with them since DoF, Bankroll etc had come out so worth a go.

This deck I think is quite straightforward, it can try to score but its preference is to kill. On the day 4 out of its 5 wins where kills.

I found the hardest choice early on was going for Surveyor and SSL Endorsement or some other ICE and Global Food Initiative. I preferred the power of Surveyor and the economy of SSL. Although sometimes this deck can run rich the wrong draw etc can turn the tables.

A change I made later in this decks life was to remove the one off Audacity and the 3rd Too Big to Fail. These became NGO Front. Although Too Big to Fail is such a good card its useless in games where you have money or when you don’t want to much bad pub. And speaking of bad pub, people question the worth of playing Mining Accident against Outfit, I found in a lot of games that it still hurts because you can’t tax a runner easily when their at 5+ bad pub. At least with NGO you can get a good money boost and it can cause people to run when they'd rather not. On the day the NGOs where mostly used look like 4/2 or over advanced Project Atlas. One of my favorite tricks was scoring an Atlas like a double advance NGO.

I spent some time thinking of swapping the Oaktown Renovation out but its just such a good agenda and doesn't hurt to score early.

Best Defense was added largely from playing against my wife's Smoke deck a lot and it was used to get rid of the misdirection, it was used to great effect in one game on the day (better write up here).

I don’t think I ever wanted or needed the BOOM!, it was usually one of my first combo pieces to be discarded.

Although not needed often the Exchange of Information was a life saver. In one game I was struggling to keep the runner out of R&D, I was on 3 points (Hostile and Atlas) they where had a Hostile and SSL. After hitting them with a Hard-Hitting News they ended there turn on 1 tag, not enough to kill them but enough to swap the my Hostile for their SSL, putting me in a saver position to score or kill.

I’d love to say how OP Border Control is and how well the ICE suit was but on the day I can’t remember rezing much ICE, the odd Surveyor, Ice Wall and Hortum.

As always it was a brilliant tournament, so many fun decks and a great group of people

Thanks to everyone for the brilliant games and atmosphere, Thanks to all the GvC team who organize such a fun and meaningful event. Thank you to Steve for all the hard work he puts into organizing the Netrunner tournament, sorting prizes and keeping the game going.

Cheers for reading.
