Top Eight Montreal Regional BaBW

Johnny Polite 387

This is the corp deck I took to the Montreal Regional this past Saturday. I finished 5/6 (not sure) out of 44 players playing Kenma and BaBW. I had been playing Hayley and various asset spam decks for a long time, and wanted to play FAST decks. Be the change you want to see in the meta?

This was originally duplicated from "Brian's Building a Better World", a regional top eight placing decklist I found here on nrdb (hopefully it shows up in "inspired by") only changes I made were to cut a Cobra for an Errand Boy and cut ice walls for Bailiffs. I don't think Cobra does anything in the deck, really - I like Cobra, but not really without Batty. Errand Boy is more taxing and speeds up your game if it fires. I'll probably cut the second Cobra, too. It can also really use a CVS - medium digs hurt.

It's a fun deck. The games it lost in the double elim to knock me out were against Spy Camera Hayley (once the tech trader money comes in it's game over) and a DDos False Echo Val. I made a key mistake in the Val Game though, which was tossing a beanstalk when I was rich. Beanstalk is the only card that can take you from 0 credits to Scorched in a turn, so that was really dumb of me. It was a long day.

Hey, I originally posted "Brian's Better World", glad it's working out for you!

Funnily I also got knocked out by a DDoS False Echo build, hard to beat a runner that wins in 1 turn with midseasons, you have to rush out really fast...

About Cobra: I actually didn't know what sentries to put. At first I had Caduceus but there's a lot of Kate in my meta and between the bad pub and the link it never did anything. Cobra actually got me quite a few snipes on breakers from people that didn't respect the card and didn't play around low strength program trashing out of weyland. That said Errand Boy seems fine too.

I never really felt like I needed a CVS but I think I'll include a Crisium Grid. Siphon spam can really hurt.

@Slowriffs It's a fun deck! My meta has a fair amount of Medium players, so a CVS would be useful there to just not automatically lose on a big dig turn. I agree it could also use a Crisium, but I feel like the deckslots are fairly tight. Could be worth a try, though, instead of CVS. Another change I'm trying is Posted Bounty - I've noticed runners almost never run early double advanced agendas, so it can present a lose-lose situation. Hostile is money and can be fast advanced for the win, so I'm not sure which is actually better.

Hi Brian here.

How was Localized Product Line for you. Slowriffs put it into my deck instead of BLC, but I hate it :p . Imo it does win games, but those games were wins already. So I never needed it.

Please settle this between us #screwLPL

@ryanbantwinsI guess I'd have to try BLC in the deck to compare, but I like the Localized Product Line. It's not uncommon to land midseasons when you only have 0 or 1 Scorched, so it's great that way to have 4 cards that can get you your kill pieces. I also had one game where the runner's money was getting too close to mine so I Jackson'd in three restructures then added them all to my hand.

BLC being a double is quite wonky. I like the Product Line, it gets you what you need, when you need it.

I found the key to beating these oppressive Runner decks like False Echo or Spycams is just to pressure scoring stuff before they get set up. Fast Track is really key in that regard.

Posted Bounty is a trap imo. You usually set up your kill over 2 turns, because of Plascretes, Hoppers or IHW. The window to use Posted Bounty to effect is too limited in my experience. Try maybe including some Corp Sales Teams to keep the pressure up while scoring.

I really liked the lpl, being able to tutor any 3 operations from the deck with lpl/consulting makes it super consistent.

..and really tricky to play against. Vouch.

Bah, I guess I will have to name the BLC version "Brian's Best World" than :p

Also I would recommend Corporate War over CST for this deck, but I personnaly wouldn't swap out the atlas.

And ofc congratz for taking BABW so high in a tournament #keepWeylandgreat

What do you think about Voter Intimidation? I feel that it is crazy at beating those Critics!

I'm kind of new to compNR but I was directed to look up Weyland "Rush" decks, and was wondering if this deck, which I really like the look of is something you would consider falls into that vein?

Thanks! Josh

28 Jul 2016 Slowriffs

@GarrattJ Pretty much. It's mostly a kill deck though. You start rushing out agendas asap but as soon as the runner steals the plan shifts to landing midseasons and flatlining them.

@SlowriffsThanks! Trying to find a deck to sort of start learning with and this "style" was recommended as I'm struggling to learn some of the more advanced concepts. Cheers for the help!

28 Jul 2016 clercqie

Yes, it definitely is! :p

If you don't win in the first 10 turns or so, your chances drop severely. Keep that in mind.

Also, this deck is really bad if your meta is full of people playing anti-tag tech cards, such as Film Critic or New Angeles City Hall, so beware of that.

28 Jul 2016 GarrattJ

@clercqieOh yeah? Okay I'll keep that in mind! It's more a matter of finding deck that I can learn with, I'll take my lumps when I have to but having some place to start learning what makes a deck good is really what I'm looking for. Card pool is too big for me to really know what's going on, and how to best exploit it.

Well, in any case Supermodernism-like builds such as this one are well-suited to learn the nuances of recognizing / forcing scoring windows. When I started out, I started playing the same strategy and I can definitely say the lessons learned are helping me in every Corp game I play nowadays. :) The playstyle is also incredible fun, so that's a plus.

It's old, but this fantastic article is a must read if you wanna start killing people, Weyland style: thesatelliteuplink.blogspot.be

@GarrattJ I would that it's not the best example of Weland rush deck. As @Slowriffs said it's more about kill, while rush decks is more about tempo.

Look at any Argus Security: Protection Guaranteed builds that include Hostile Takeover, Archer, Data Raven, Snare! and a kill package. Probably Profiteering and Casting Call. These cards are more viable in fast pacing game and their tempo impact much stronger. All other cards such as econ and ice suite will be pretty much the same.

The devil is in the details (:

I'd say this qualifies as a rush deck. It's really all about gaining an econ advantage over the runner so that you can score agendas quickly while also threatening midseasons. It means you win fast or lose, because if the game goes long your operation econ can't keep up with a lot of runner late game econ engines (Spy Camera Hayley, for example, has a monstrous late game, and if it gets to that point you basically can't win). However, it's easy enough to gain 30 or so credits quite early, and advance naked Oaktowns because the runner knows nothing good will happen if they steal it.

Thanks for all the help @Johnny Polite``@igrekk``@clercqie``@Slowriffs! Looking forward to playing it. I've thrown three decks together that all seem to function around this general strategy and I'm just going to try and power through some games. Any suggestions for decent starting Runners? I've been told Criminal is a good place to start, so any more help? :D

29 Jul 2016 Johnny Polite

@igrekkI like Voter Intimidation, but how do you make room? In my mind, the influence in this deck exactly as it should be. Maybe once Weyland gets a few more transactions you can not include Green Level, but for now I think you need it. Only card I can see cutting is Localized Product Line, but I think it's too good to lose.

29 Jul 2016 igrekk

I'm deeply convinced that LPL is a "win more" card. Once you landed midseasons the game is a half way in a pocket and flatline just a matter of time. And there is only one way to use it - fetch Scorched Earth or maybe Restructure, while Voter Intimidation opens a hella lot of plays

29 Jul 2016 Johnny Polite

I disagree. The thing about landing the midseasons is that it changes the game entirely. Before midseasons, the runner plays cautiously. Once they have a ton of tags, they will hit R&D and HQ as hard as they can. If they have multi access, if you can't close out the win very quickly then you're in trouble (it isn't like the ice has a hope of keeping anyone out).

Nice looking deck here. I have been going back and forth on some similar builds, and thought I would ask about one particular card slot: the Paywall Implementation. Does this usually do good work in a 10-11 agenda deck? The alternative I was considering is the Subliminal Messaging, since a runner who recognizes the Midseasons threat might quit poking around and dig through their own stack. Also, Subliminal is naturally recurring, while the Paywall can easily be a wasted card if a runner gets a lucky (or intended) agenda steal. Thoughts on this? Thanks!
