Deep Depression (7-1 @ Reading)

I went 4-0 and The King went 3-1 with this in Reading (tourney link at the bottom)

The new set is great! Lots of new things to explore and I’m excited to properly dig into it!

However, the existence of this deck is unfortunate and it’s primarily a result of rotation. The cards in this deck were designed for a faster pre-Elevation card pool. The game has slowed down now (except Nebula) and Deep Dive Sable is simply too strong and consistent because Deep Dive is too easy to play with all the bypass cards that make ice irrelevant. Almost all the consistent counters to Deep Dive are gone (Border, Ag, Bio-Bault, Crisium) and this deck itself has even gained some improvements (Lie Low, Transfer, Maintenance Access). I feel horrible playing this deck because really I’m just rolling a rigged die rather than playing Netrunner. The best way to counter this is probably to play Angeliques and Anemones which is just countering a die roll with a die roll. And that’s Depressing. The King says #JoeyWheeler

When you have a critical mass of ice cheating effects like Malandragem, S-Dobrado, Backstitching, and Boomerang, ICE becomes way too straight-forward to deal with. Ice text becomes irrelevant and it’s a simple exercise of “does number of ice cheat = number of ice?” I have heard many people voice the view that if bypass Mercury is good then that’s bad for Netrunner. This deck is that Mercury deck.

Also Pinhole is probably good to deal with upgrades like Mercia and Void. I decided to keep things simple for this initial list because I didn’t have the time to consider specific matchups.

Doom and gloom aside, I’ve really enjoyed Elevation so far! Lots of cool cards and sooooooo many decks that I plan on building.

It’s early days but this deck is going to heavily warp what corps are playable and I think that’s really unfortunate because there are a lot of cool corp decks out there that would be fun to play. SBT please ban Deep Dive 🙏
