Art of War / Questionable Twitter Accounts / Me to 74% of opponents over my last three weeks of testing
In the spirit of a good chorus, I will repeat my job in Netrunner - put on a goddamn show. 50% of the time is creating some original hot mess, with other half creating new and improved* forks. For this OTG corp list, I stuck with the latter.
If you haven't checked it out already, be sure to give a read, like, and subscribe to Brandon's excellent Nebula kill list (https://netrunnerdb.com/en/decklist/62c11e1b-bc51-42f4-9d0f-5703fd692297/time-magic-1st-at-nanpc-). I wasn't experiencing what I wanted with the Nebula score out deck. With that, this list hit all of the receptors that I wanted. But I needed more. I needed different. I needed the show:
This kicked off arguably the most exploratory "influence and card optimization" effort I've put into a deck in recent memory. I put in about 110 games with some version <6 cards different than this posted list. Whether you agree or not, this writeup is meant to illustrate / break down my process and evaluation of decklist strategy.
Before we get to cards and the testing process, the goal needed to be honed in a bit:
These locked in tags must matter in two ways.
Per the tournament prep schedule over the last two weeks or so, I was doing my due dilligence across the latest wave of smurfs: Fuddruckers, HilaryClinton, DianaRoss, WolfTwo, BurgerKing, and more... If I squinted my eyes, all I saw was the following three things:
Kill was still possible. However, it the result of an early EZ GG NO RE or a grindy AF middle game. There was no act III in these games. One could say this is probably (definitely) respresentative of the current meta. Take that where you want and/or need to. If that doesn't work and you cannot play Jeitinho corp side, then you have to tap into the dark side.
Aside from "Greasing the Palm", there aren't tag and scoring related non-nbn cards. I will be wrong on this point because I inevitably can't read. Do your due dilligence in the comments. The soft commandment is that this play(s) should net us at least 1 point, to move forward past 1 False Lead sace. The menu:
Being able to score a 5/3 is the best scoring bang-for-your-buck of losing an agenda. Remember, you are doing this because you cannot feasibly TM kill your opponent, so lean into it. This wins you the game, sets you up for a "One Last Job" score out, or made them waste a higher volume of defense so you can carry on without elaborating. This is not ideal, but again, we are not in ideal territory.
Locked in.
Since our "tags-mattering" material was in faction, now was the time to solve potential influence choices. Like any good and functional advice, it should cover the very-human (and personally endorsed) avenue of how to min/max breaking the rules. Let's tap into the fun, but wrong choice of removing 1x EoTl:
You get 8 influence
You can rejig your primary strategy (damage / did you enjoy the ANR reference in here)
You cannot rejig your secondary strategy (because these cards don't exist)
You can rejig / build the delivery mechanism for either strategy (this ended up being the winner)
"Agendas" is Vulnerability Audit, which is not cringe, but a child's dream in this deck (don't try to sass me with SAM because we are talking about INFLUENCE)
Ice in NBN is either amazing or useless (pro-tip there is not much ice in the game that really, really matters by the end-game / at least out of this type of deck)
Upgrades are not cringe (but you have good / great ones in NBN so it is probably not needed)
Assets are cringe
Operations are chad
By my count, I tried ~14 unique cards across those categories. The best choices were the following, in acesnding power rating TM:
Dishonorable Mention, Daniela Jorge Inácio: says 2 cards. This is a firm no, but if you win some random game because of it I will commend you.
Honorable Mention, 2x Mindscaping: Yeah, yeah, yeah I get playing one. However, it usually equaling 1x fartship / Steelskin is meh, which means you gotta go to 2. That is also a bit dicey, but if you are going to do it, do it hard.
Tree Line: The 180 of the choices. The influence cost is great, you don't need your ID flipped, and you can have 3! I typically installed 1x, expended 1 (on the installed TL against shaper and sometimes crim OR MEST against anarch), and "didn't draw the third" because of ratios. Cool, but no fireworks.
Corporate Hospitality: When your ID is flipped, this card is doing a 360. The best line for this is getting an operation you just played (usually EoTl) or recovering an agenda you were loaning to Archives. While cool for supplementing kill and/or delaying your death, not quite there.
Pivot: When your ID is flipped, this card is doing a 720 (notice a chorus theme there?). It is no longer a double, it unlocks patterns you didn't have in hand (underrated is grabbing your 1st False Lead and saying "U won't m8"), your opponent will trash it for 3 because it has more text than an Old Testament verse (enabling oppo), and it can fast advance OUT OF YOUR DECK. All the fun of Deuces Wild, but on steroids.
Simulation Reset: The 900. While it doesn't have as much defined agency as Pivot, you can fix / create a menu of choices longer than The Cheesecake Factory's. The world is your Oyster. It reminds me of this energy from one of my favorite lists I made (https://netrunnerdb.com/en/decklist/f41b94f1-e9b5-4e14-903e-4fd1846335bc/ctz-wgas).
You can trade useless cards in HQ for useful ones in Archives. Get rid of the ice that don't matter anymore, fix your econ to win you the game (don't go too dopamine crazy by overindexing on your 4th and 5th YDLs), rig your hand for an impending Cupellation, and/or better setup your next 2 turns. You could also be sneaky by pulling "The Oscars" and putting "it all" into Archives. Worst case, 2025 welcome back 4th Spin Doctor.
Dropping to 2x EoTl was a no-go. But, I still had my answers from all the above work. I settled on 1x each and they have proven to be extremely valuable in addition to the following changes. While I won't go into the full monty of any and all remaining options (there's enough text on this page), here are my remaining thoughts:
You have 3 influence. Use it how you want. You know my pick.
Touch-Ups as a 3x is a must. On the range of "value" (mest counters and/or delaying DD) to the range of kill, you need 3x of it.
2x Funhouse is where you want to be. You are going to have 1-2 creepy relatives at the family party, which is something in life you just deal with. 3 is egregious and something you shouldn't engage with.
Lack of Ping / 2x VSA: 1x tag once is lame. Playing 1x is like saying "na-na boo boo" and then you are sad. 2x VSA is cheap, an issue for those Bankhar and bypass nerds, and has the potential to be a 2 credit tax even with a decoder installed (ping is always 1).
Starlit Knight: 2x tag face check is tight. It mostly prevents people going tag me from an ice perspective(not a "damage doesn't matter" one). While it isn't amazing in the middle, it does matter for the post "tag/time-lock" turn(s) if you don't win, due to the extra subs. Chorus - "in the end, it (ice) doesn't even matter I HAD TO FALL TO LOSE (win) IT ALL"
SYNC Rerouting: For 0, you flip your ID, cause pain to your opponent, is anti DD tech in addition to Touch-Ups ("each"), and your opponent will think about trashing it when accessed.
2x Petty Cash: Oh boy here we go. You can ignore this one, but I will not be going back to 3x yet. Gaining 2x creds from hand for a click sucks. Yes I know you can just draw past it and definitely do that (or trash it due to sabotage). But, slots are really, really tight in this deck and using the slot for a better econ is what I went with. You realistically need 3-4 Petty Cash / Touch-Ups, so 5 is fine. This has not backfired yet and maybe this quote will be in the Art of War II
I love this deck and hope you do too. At OTG, this went 2-1, with BOTH wins as scores. That third game was very close too (I got to 6) and it was still leaning score. While most of the pregnant pauses I experience come from people I explain my decks to, I can attest that these pauses were from my opponents and viewers alike.
