Better Weyland

Erik_Twice 2044

Like many I quickly realized that Bryan Stinson and Best Defense went a long way towards making Midseasons/Boom one of the most powerful shells in the metagame . With influence costs being kept in check with Consulting Visit abd ICE like Veritas and Sapper being released it really seemed Weyland was going to be one of the best factions around.

Except that my testing showed support for two things: The shell is better in NBN and the problem with most decklists is that they have to score and waste slots in points instead of counters to Runner's counters.

Ok, let's focus on NBN first. Why is this shell better in NBN? 1) NBN ICE is better and more synergetic. 2) NBN has access to secondary cards like Jackson Howard, Targeted Marketing and Reversed Accounts in faction without spending influence. 3) NBN has Restructured Datapool

The first is important because my testing showed that, while Veritas and Mausolus are cool, deep down they are not taxing enough to build a good remote nor to defend R&D well. This is important because without tax, you simply can't get Runners into Midseasons/Bryan range and Mausolus into IP Block, while cool, didn't deliver that tax.

The second is important because I'm 100% sure you need both Reversed Accounts and Targeted Marketing to win reliably in the current metagame.

Reversed: 1) Allows you to wins in which the Runner got very rich 2) It allows you to bluff 3) It makes triggering Bryan much easier

Targeted Marketing 1) It prevents the Runner from making money (Magnum Opus, Temujin, Cache/Pawnshop, etc.) 2) It allows you to fight denial (Parasite, Account Siphon) 3) It gives you free money if you name a breaker they need (Paperclip)

Weyland can run all of these cards, so it's not like they are much worse, they simply have less options and make more sacrifices influence-wise.

The most important, however, is Restructured Datapool. In testing, I found the following problems:

1) The Runner has more money than you and wins by camping the remote. 2) Agendas are scored and Aaron Marrón gets so many counters that you cannot tag him.

Most people are trying to solve 1) by rushing only to find that 2) becomes a bigger problem. My solution (besides the better ICE like Data Raven->Data Ward) is:

1) To score as few agendas as possible so Aaron is blank. 2) To have a secondary win-condition that isn't Midseasons nor scoring.

That is, to play Restructured Datapool. You score one and spam it every sngle turn of the game until they have no money and die. Yay! The great thing is that you can do this turn 5, mixing the good parts of rushing with the good parts of not-scoring.

Rounding the deck is the typical set of counters, most notably Snatch and Grab which is used to kill Beth, Film Critic, Kati Jones and all other nastyness.

The only thing I miss in Weyland? Contract Killer. That thing was just cool, man.

PD: As far as identity goes, I don't think they matter much. I tried Sol, but you never score so it's not very useful and Data Hound on its own compares poorly to better Hard-Hitting News and a smaller deck size.

Hey Erik - really enjoyed those games with you last night. How do you do against higher link runners? I guess if you're crazy wealthy you can pump the trace, but - if they have power tap and citadel, for example?

I played against this and barely won. It was one of the scariest decks I've played against in a while. If you were piloting it then I was the guy who won by playing Notoriety.

@BizTheDad that was me actually :P.

Love this deck, managed to get 3 turn 3 kills today just by hitting them hard turn 2 then booming turn 3. I do wonder if its worth adding a third convis though. You really want to be able to hard hit or season when the opportunity presents itself. I also swapped an IP block for a third raven because there is quite a lot of crim in my meta and IP block is less good again them.

@Tolaasin

The main problem of that matchup is Power Tap, in that it anuls your ICE. Generally, if it's common in your meta, I would play this deck in Weyland or tweak it so it's less reliant on tracer.

What I do when I see those matchups is press the remote hard. You generate a lot of cash in a very short time so you have to rush, preferably behind Sapper/Etr or Raven/Ward. As long as you stay ahead you can threaten with HHN for the win. Still, a bad matchup.

@BizTheDad

Those are very kind words! While I don't think I've played this version against you I remember testing earlier ones (Weyland, probably) against you so things seem to have improved! :)

@maxey

If you can fit another operation, I would add a second HHN over another Consulting Visit. It's going to be your most common target and it's the card I recur the most, I often wish I had two copies.

For me IP Block is a star, simply because it's taxing.

I took a version of this deck to the FFG store champs yesterday and placed 2nd. Thanks so much for crushing me with it on Jinteki a while back.
