Pre-rotation decklist |
This is my first Gagarin Deep Space deck. So bear with me. I'll do a brief explanations of the choices and playstyle. Suggestions are welcome.
AGENDAS:
Global Food Initiative - is very good as it condenses the Agenda points and doesn't give away too many points if stolen. This deck is a little permissive at the earlier stages.
Oaktown Renovation - because the deck is light on economy this Agenda works as a quick fix whilst taxing the Runner to try and go get it. I ususally prepare the server, install and advance twice and then I triple advanced and score it next turn. NAPD would be an awesome addition (5 creds to steal) but the credits from the Oaktown really help a long way and the next agenda is untouchable...
Project Atlas - just being a 3/2 is awesome enough, but if you can stick one or two extra counters it gets downhill for the Runner pretty fast, since you can go fetch all the answers at your pleasure.
The Future is Now - normally is an Agenda I'm happy to forfeit, so it becomes an Archer or a Corporate Town. It tutors for an Ash, PAD or whatever you're in need. It's a solid agenda for the double duty it pulls.
ASSETS:
Corporate Town - this one-of is against all the DLR deck going about. You'll find it, protect it with your life and once the field is clear you start scoring out. Against Valencia try to mulligan for a The Future is Now and go for it. The 5 cost plus the 1 is an enough deterrent. Imp is the worst enemy, of course, but the deck packs quite some program trashing. Ash helps too. Then just control the pace.
Daily Business Show - initially there were 2 copies of this card, but with all the DLR and Noise I needed the third copy of Jackson for necessity sake. It smooths your draw and it's an high value Asset with a reasonable high trashing cost.
Executive Boot Camp - this is another piece solely against Valencia, as it lets rez ICE regardless of the Blackmails and goes fetch you the Corporate Town later. Against the other Runners is good value overall.
Jackson Howard - good stuff has been said. So... that. 3-of.
PAD Campaign - This is your main drip economy source. You must protect it with one ICE at least. Normally Runners will desist of trashing it after you protect it with ICE. Have at least one protected at all times.
Private Contracts - this card started as Melange Mining Co, but it was quickly replaced by Marked Accounts, but then became this for influence issues. I'm not disliking it really. You can go about and burst for 6 while your other assets do their work. It has an huge trash cost which to some Runner is enough to never attempt to trash it.
Public Support - this card makes this deck work. While it's ticking down, it forces the Runner to run it and waste its resources, from where you install the Agenda which the Runner now cannot access. If unimpeded it'll grant you 1 point, but more importantly another card to sacrifice to Corporate Town or Archer. It'll smooth out the points count, and maybe make you score one less Agenda for an investment of 2 credits. That's huge value.
UPGRADES:
Ash 2X3ZB9CY - Not only this guy is 4 credits to trash, it works with all the taxation you're forcing. It offers good protection for your agendas, corporate town or PAD campaign even (hey, if that's winning you the game!).
Crisium Grid - The myriad of cards this cancels for just 3 credits leaves me in complete beddazzlement and the only reason I don't take the third copy is because one normally sticks around, because 5 credits is a bitch to pay and two in some matchups it might get situationally useless (not entirely useless, you can still bluff with it).
Expo Grid - add insult to injury. This makes PAD on steroids, Daily Business dirty, Public Support annoying as sh*t, Private Contracts a PAD campagain Opus-like engine altogether and Corporate Town loling. 1 of is enough for what it does. It give solid credits. And even if the Runner just trashes the Asset but leaves this alone, a new asset will show up.
OPERATIONS:
Hedge Fund - because money is good.
Interns - what better to do when the runner just trashed a 5 cost asset? Put it again on the table. I had some opponents wanting to flip the table when I play this, right after they paid their precious credits. The psychological stress this card makes is not to be understated. Also, more ASH! I feel dirty when I play this card. Dirty good.
ICE:
All 1-of... why? Because why not? By having all one-ofs you keep your servers unpredictable and you can give out more defined roles to each ICE with each match-up, which improves their utility (it really does help you lay it out better). There's a couple of guidelines however: NO, Meru Mati does not just go on HQ, it goes wherever you need a barrier and need to rez it for a bargain. Tollbooth normally reserved for the remotes. Unless you're getting Account Siphoned or The Maker's Eye right up in your face a lot. Wendigo is actually a fine piece and disguises himself as space ICE good enough, it's cool to use on utility programs such as SMCs, Multithreaders, Datasuckers, or to stop a run by prevent the correct program from working. Negotiator is still up for debate, but I'm liking it, it's a decent early ICE. Wraparound against Faust. The rest is just multi-subs or high strenght ICE to tax the Runner. But really, this suite is really maleable so you can change it as you want.
Being this my first Gagarin deck, I reckon it can still be improved. So, if you have any idea how to do so, shout it out.
Cheers

The thins is: I can justify all of my ICE choices. I can also back it up with general advantages they can bring to the table... so to identify which ones gives me advantage depends solely on the meta I'm facing. But, since the suite is flexible you can adapt during the game or by adding/removing copies. The first draft actually included one The Root, but it was too expensive to rez, protect and give you value. It often costed you more than the Runner. And the Runners actively want to trash this. But they second guess against a PAD, so, there. Btw, The Root with Oaktown Renovation is an awesome interaction. But other than that, it's just to awkward and clunky. I haven't had the opportunity to analyze and test out the new cards from the box. Your recommendation might be really worthwhile. Rezzed for 1, gives you immediately one and drains at least three from the Runner. Definately sounds like a good proposition. Team Sponsorship may recover some lost PAD campaigns and Ash 2X3ZB9CY. It is a card to think about, although the influence requirement would have to have me fiddle with some other out of faction cards. May try it though, seems to go about the plan of this deck. A quick word on Ash: Normally, I don't need that much money for him to succeed, because when I pilot the deck proper the Runner is forced to waste a lot of resources to keep me from snowballing. Thus, Ash normally tends to comply with I want from him. It might just be the particular way I use him to fill within the strategy I devised. When I say economy is light, I normally stay on the 12-15 credits mark. Of course, rezzing a Tollbooth with that kind of money is daunting, but it's a good reserve to fire an Ash, wouldn't you say? |
The 1-of ice idea is interesting. You sacrifice consistency and focus for flexibility, and I don't know that there is anything inherently wrong with that. However, I'd say most people find that certain ice benefits them much more than other ice in general. I simply recommend you identify the ice which consistently gives you the advantage, and then include more copies of that ice while cutting the 1 of's that aren't working.
The one big opportunity I see here is economy. You say the deck is light on econ. Some id's can get away with being light on econ, but I don't think Gagarin is one of them, especially if Ash 2X3ZB9CY is in your game plan. Here are some different economy ideas to try:
Try using The Root in your scoring remote, so that you can use it to advance your ice and rez assets. A rez cost of 6 is a tough pill to swallow, but if you can then immediately triple advance an Asteroid Belt in front of it, it becomes viable.
Try Launch Campaign, which will return value quickly and is not a huge investment to rez.
Not so much an economy idea, but try Team Sponsorship instead of Interns. Not only does this do the same thing, it fits more with the gagarin game plan. You may never get to use it, but it will at least drain your opponent of cash.
