Throwback MaxX: Levy Suxx (12th, Hemophilia Charity Tourney)

Since the Great De-MaxXening of Levy and SoT rotating, I've always been of the opinion that MaxX is exactly one card away from being not only playable, but genuinely good. Naturally, when I saw Whiteblade gave us a chance to play 1 card we wouldn't normally be able to, I jumped straight to MaxX: why not prove it?

And let me tell you something: that card ain't Levy, folks.

In all seriousness, I think Levy MaxX would be solid in Standard, but Throwback is a bit too fast. At no point was it ever correct for me to Levy. I think MaxX is a solid choice in this format, but I think you're better off choosing Same Old Thing to ensure you can fire Labor Rights, or choosing Deep Data Mining and being Bendy. Levy didn't do enough here.

This deck went 2-2 (I ID'd round 4 due to SoS and bad matchups), winning against Architects of Tomorrow (Hippo is really good) and Blue Sun (Stimhack is really good) and losing a close one against Pinsel's VLC tribal Asa and less-than-close one against Scorch Argus (probably this deck's worst matchup if your mills don't cooperate).

Specific card choices:

  • I was on Shrike because I completely forgot Odore is a card that exists. This is 100% a mistake and those 2 influence should be another Maker's or maybe a Legwork.

  • Engolo is really good.

  • Embezzle is solid when half the decks you'll face are throwbacking Midseasons.

  • Moshing looks bad and that's because it mostly is. I played it about 1/2 the time I had it in hand, and it was really good the times I played it, but it was really garbage to draw it the rest of the time. I think being on 1 or maybe 2 is right.

  • The cutlery is ok enough. Earned a spot, I'd say. Don't forget that Engolo doesn't convert types, just adds -- you can still Knifed a barrier you break with Engolo.

Shoutouts to Whiteblade for running this tournament -- the format was sick, the tournament was awesome, and it was a great time!
