MaxXsucker

TonyStellato 783

After months of creating countless variations of Andysucker, I finally found the missing piece of the puzzle; MaxX!

Let's start from the top. When Lotus Field was announced, I stayed up all night trying to find a solution to it. I didn't want to abandon Yog, and influence was already so tight. Throughout the months, Andy has gone throughout so many variations to solve both the Lotus Field conundrum, as well as the other countless obstacles that the Lunar Cycle has created; Knights, Parasites, Faerie-Recursion, etc. If you can think of it, I probably made a bad deck around it. These various Andy(mostly sucker) decks were being brought to tournaments but never performing well. Even at the most recent Store Champs I attended, where I seeded 2nd, it was my RP that was untouched (seriously, undefeated in swiss! Its still single-handedly carrying my miserable self to the cut), and my Andy just continuously let me down. I have been getting sick of standing on the shoulders of RP, and I want to play well with both my Runner and my Corp! However, I am much too stubborn to give up on AndySucker. Its just a fun and solid (and most importantly, consistent) deck.

Well, O&C came out and I took a break to try out the AggroMaxX deck everyone is raving about. It was...well...it was fantastic. After the first game I was laughing out loud, having the time of my life. MaxX is an absolute riot to play (no pun intended), and it didn't take long for me to say, "hey, what if I just import my Andy deck into MaxX?!"

All of a sudden, everything clicked. I can include all the pieces that I've been struggling to fit over the last few months. Knight, Parasite, Clone Chip, Personal Touch, I've Had Worse, Imp. Its all here! Sure, I lose Account Siphon and Faerie, but I think the trade off is well worth it.

So, without further ado, lets get into my favorite Runner deck that I've built in a loooong time.

Economy: Day Job, Sure Gamble, Dirty Laundry, Desperado, Kati Jones.

Surprising no one, Day job is fantastic. Throw in Sure Gamble and Dirty Laundry, and a good draw will mean you probably won't need sustainable econ throughout the game. However, you can't always depend on a good draw, so Kati Jones IS worth Deja Vu'ing. She'll keep you afloat throughout the game. Desperado is (obviously) great. I wasn't making a 'sucker deck without it. Because of Parasite, Archives is ALWAYS a means to make money, Its rarely protected enough that a parasite can't clear it. Running 4 times on Archives is often the right play.

Draw: MaxX, I've Had Worse.

You know what feels great? Not running Plascrete. The fact that IHW is never a dead draw, and also helps find what you're looking for...its the real deal. Every Anarch will be running 3, and my deck is no exception.

Breakers: Corroder, Mimic, Yog, Knight.

With the addition of Parasite, D4V1D, and Knight, Andysucker's classic suite still works. Why change what ain't broke?

Extras: Archives Interface, Personal Touch, etc.

So, a lot of the deck is predictable. Levy, Deja Vu, and SoT are staples in MaxX. Imp is just a fantastic card, and Medium is a win-condition. A 1x Infiltration is so good in MaxX. Its likely going to be trashed when you don't need it, and you WILL see it during the match-up where it matters. If they Mushin something, there is a very high chance that you have it ready to be SoT'd. Archives Interface is for Cyberdex Virus Suite, since it can ruin this decks day. At 2 cost, even if they don't run CVS its worth it just to play Archive Interface when you see it, anyway. You'll run Archives enough that it helps neuter Jackson's recursion ability (goodbye SanSan, goodbye Biotic), as well as stop Shocks! from ruining your day. Andy had Security Testing to avoid Shock/ShiKyu/Space Camp shenanigans, MaxX has Archive Interface. It also does wonders in the Cerebral Imaging Match-up (since you don't run Plascrete!). Lastly, Personal Touch is for Lotus Field. I used to run 3x Knight, and a KeyMaster, but I just didn't ever use that stuff. I still run the 1x of Knight just in case, but I was always too worried about Blue Sun running Lotus Field. Personal Touch is a cleaner solution. It dies to Will O, because sending Yog back will trash the PT, and trashing a card in a MaxX deck isn't the end of the world (Whereas, it definitely is for Andy).

And that's it! I'm having fun developing a decent deck that I want to play. Its a little tricky to pilot because your recursion is doing a little TOO much. You need to make sure you don't put yourself in a "no cards in deck" situation, as well as a "clicking for cash" situation. That means having a way to get your trashed Levy AND your trashed Kati. Other than that, it runs light on Multi-Access, so it really is about a lot of pressure on all three servers. Its a deck that I'm still learning how to play, but its a lot of fun, and I think this is better (for the current meta) than Andysucker. Enjoy! Suggestions, advice, and questions are welcomed and appreciated!

Do you find the 1x Personal Touch awkward to get when you need it? Would it be better as a Zu?

@Thike it was a Zu, originally. I just never wanted to play it. In a match-up where I know I'll need it, I'll save a Déjà Vu for it. The same applies to Kati. You'll see a 1x by mid-game, and knight helps me until them. I don't find that I need these pieces most games, they are more like emergency cards. Most of the time, the deck runs very minimally.

Just remember that the ruling on I've Had Worse is that it won't save you from a Scorched if the Scorched would have killed you. So you need to stay at five cards in hand to avoid a double scorched (and hope that the one card they miss isn't the I've Had Worse).

@Oisin of course, but that's not a concern. I guess you can always throw in 1x plascrete if you are still worried, but against weyland, just don't play your IHW. By the time they have a double scorched window, you will probably be holding 2 IHW (you can déjà vu it if you think they still wanna scorched you).

Hi. Your write uo is really thorough and well written. So decided to give the deck a try tonight. 4 games.

It feels like a smoothed out criminal. You don't have special orders, siphon and shut down but the Maxx thingie keeps you supplied with fresh options, however since you don't have much in the way of tricks, what you will find is your rig or your money. Not much disruption of the corps plan, except parasite and getting accesses, but also nothing to distract you from that. And getting acceses for cheap wins games. If you get Desperado early you can check remotes and build up sucker tken for a profit which is nice and what's make "running criminal" a thing. The problem and the game loss came against Blue Sun (total kill deck with scorch and punitives), if the centrals become costly quickly, what would you suggest as a course of action ? Sucker tokens are your way through big ice and it can be a real problem getting locked out / semi locked out. I did not play against HB but I can see a similar problem.

A long game felt like = first pass through your deck, get the rig built, keep clicking on Kati, spare clicks are to keep pressure on and get tokens. Deja Vu that Personal TOuch ! Levy and go in everywhere. It's sad to see the economy geting milled. Also you should probably Levy before the decks runs out because there is a "window" where the multiple IHW you keep are not effective (< 3 , 6 ,9 cards in deck ) and after Levy when you have not found them yet. I was almost tempted to exploit komainu and pup to get a massive fresh hand and find things faster, but did not.

I swapped Day Job fo liberated, as everybody who played DJ says it's too limiting and predictable. Liberated keeps you at threatening credits level. Archives interface is genius. :) too bad it costs 3 . The other problem is the influence is really tight. Basically the only thing you can work around are the 2 clone chips, and i hate seeing them milled so I would not go down to 1. Bu I'd really like to find a way to squeeze Utopia Shard in, as an added HQ pressure and more scorch protection.

Other things I'd like to fit in but the deckslots are tight so don't know how: -Wanton destruction. Having being on the other side of it, can be devasting no matter what your game paln is. I put 2 in the deck tonight -Memstrips. 5 mem = Rig + 1 sucker + medium or Parasite I'd prefer to keep medium alive or be able to install an emergengy David -some cutlery maybe ? for those pesky Ices that need multiple tokens and drain you of your ability to run. Looking at you Wormhole. -Stimhack ! Can't go wrong with that. can same old thing it. Maybe amped up too ? -(don't tell anybody it's a secret tech) A Quest completed or 2 for those pesky RP (they always advance the agenda to score). Could work against Weyland or glacier non-FA HB, if they exist. Could work in an Eater build

I never used same old thing 3x, but i can see how it's safer to just have them and not need them than need them and get them milled. You have a lot of recursion and that's the secret strenght of the deck. I don' know if Dirty Laundry made a difference except on turn 1.

OMG this is a wall of text ! Ecellent deck anyway. It's really admirable how it gets he fundamentals down and cut all the fat. Elegant and essential. So in the end, is this stronger than an Eater build ? I must confess I was envious all of the Maxx doing fancies stuff around me. Everybody is complaining of how aggressive she is. This deck has none of that, but it doesn't have the weaknesses and workaround too.

@jeibel Wow, thanks for taking the time to try out the deck and write this. I'll make sure to be thorough in answering. So here goes:

"It feels like a smoothed out Criminal" - That is essentially the point of the deck. I am a Criminal player at heart, and I will be the first to admit that this deck is not nearly as strong as the hyper-aggro Eater build, but its a playstyle that makes more sense to me. Its more conservative/safe but it still can put on pressure (primarily through parasite). It loses the big hitters that Crims pack (Siphon, I miss you!), and that really hurts, but it gains speed and a small but worthwhile bag of new tricks (parasite and clone chip, D4V1D, Medium, Archive Interface).

"getting accesses for cheap wins games" - the deck needs a cheap server to thrive off of. I can imagine a single Lotus Field locking HQ and R&D early game really hurting, but usually it can get a lot of accesses early on.

"I swapped Day Job for liberated, as everybody who played DJ says it's too limiting and predictable. Liberated keeps you at threatening credits level. Archives interface is genius. :) too bad it costs 3 ." - I like Day Job, because it makes the most of your "down time", and next turn you are ready to run again. I find Liberated to be such a clunky card, but I haven't tried it in this anarch build. I'll definitely give it a try, since I'm absolutely looking for any and all advice in making this deck as competitive as it can be. Archives Interface is nice, and it is also 2 credits. The text on NRdb says otherwise, but the actual card says 2 credits.

"Other things I'd like to fit in..." - My original build had both memstrips and Wanton, but I ultimately cut them for several reasons. The memstrips makes a lot of sense in the build, but I found that (when a game is going ideally), I don't want to have a full rig out. Its a deck that thrives in the early-to-mid game. It felt wrong paying for a 3 cost mem chip when you know you technically don't need it. However, I am majorly bias, since I always ran with just 5 mem off of desperado in Andy. I like the minimal-breaker thing that criminals can do. Maybe that's not right for this build, but I find that I have been able to make it work with only 5 mem. Wanton Destruction is a bonkers card. It was my original legwork in the build. Its essentially multi-access, but its way more disruptive. At first, not having the JoshB discouraged me, but I ran 2x Wanton anyway with a single Amped it. The problem was that if/when they get trashed, its just not worth it to pull it back. I eventually took it out, and the deck didn't really feel that much different. I just threw in some 3rd copies of cards, and a medium. I think it worked out.

"Everybody is complaining of how aggressive she is. This deck has none of that, but it doesn't have the weaknesses and workaround too." - So yeah, this deck is definitely not at the level of aggromaxx yet, but once again, its a different playstyle. I feel more comfortable knowing that the most popular counter cards atm aren't going to shut me out, and I also feel more comfortable running a "blue" anarch deck. Its not for everyone, but I think the deck can work simply because it has everything that's needed to cover the basics. It has draw, multi-access, sustainable econ (for the most part), ice destruction, and the ability to get in for cheap. It doesn't get too caught up on the fancy stuff, but I don't think everybody NEEDS to run the fancy stuff.

Lastly, I've always found HB a difficult match-up for this kind of deck. With that said, NEXT Ice is not problematic whatsoever, and click-able ICE is still click-able. I'll certainly be tweaking the deck based on your feedback and a lot of testing over the next while. As you mentioned, influence is really tight for this build, so it makes including some of the fun stuff (like utopia shard, which I would LOVE to run) a lot harder. Anyway, thanks for the comment and advice!

Thanks for your thoughtful answer !

@jeibel oh god! The draft copies of Archive Interface I've been using say 2 credits, but it turns out that you were right and the O&C copies say 3. I'm a filthy cheater!

11 Feb 2015 jeibel

I was surprised to see the 3 too the first time ! It changes it to something you'd play anyway (like removing combo parts against NEH) to a special card. Now i want a draft copy !
