Part-Time Magicians: Mumbad Construction-Trick of Light FA

Nopetapus 48

I've put this deck through some pretty significant testing on Jinteki, and it seems to be flexible enough to take on the latest Anarch Faust hotness without giving up too much against Shapers and Leela. It probably needs a little work in the economy suite, but I want to throw this out into the NetrunnerDB hivemind.

The Plan

The focus of our plan is on using Mumbad Construction Co., Trick of Light, and Oaktown Renovation to quickly Fast Advance out of a temporarily secure server. We want to put Mumbad Construction Co. behind either Tollbooth or Archer (or both!) and force the runner to either tax themselves running and repeatedly trashing all our assets or allow us to cheaply Fast Advance.

Economy

The economy is a hybrid of operations and GRNDL Refinery-Dedication Ceremony combos. Since you can pull off the Dedicated-GRNDL combo from hand, it's a fairly dependable source of mid-game money that gives you the money advantage you need to rez Tollbooth and Fire Wall. In isolation, GRNDL Refinery can bait runs into your taxing remote, while Dedication Ceremony can pump ice strength to make it more taxing for Faust.

ICE

Since Faust makes ICE subtypes irrelevant, Weyland is now free to ignore code gates, and focus on barriers that are taxing against Faust. In Weyland this mostly means barriers. The star of the barrier suite here is Bailiff, which usually pays for itself and is a magnet for parasites (giving your Archer and Spiderweb longer to live). On the sentry side, Archer is always good, requiring two D4VID and a Forked to permanently destroy. The only ice I'm unsure about is Negotiator. I could see running Caduceus in its place, since it has a trace ETR, and subroutines that are always relevant.

Suggestions are always appreciated! Let me know what you think!

EDIT: I've done a little more testing with some of the suggestions here and I think the deck is stronger with these changes:

+1 Ice Wall +2 Errand Boy +1 Fire Wall +2 Public Support −1 Mark Yale −3 Negotiator −2 Spiderweb +1 Elizabeth Mills −1 Mumbad Construction Co.

Mark Yale just isn't good enough to merit even a single deck slot. Public Support can help force runs or rez Archers. Errand Boy is more flexible and taxes Faust more, so I think that's the better choice for the low-strength Sentry slot.

I have one: Contract Killer. Great one-of, considering you are already playing 3xDedication Ceremony.

I did some mildly modified testing (baliff for cadeceous) .

The first question my opponent and I had was "why titan?". It seems like this strategy works a bit better in blue sun who's less hurt if they want to bounce the ice so they can combo out (although you'd probably drop the archers and the takeovers for...hadrians + orion?). The atlas search is always nice, but didn't feel good enough? Double counters on investment is great, but only if they don't play around it well.

Second it felt very poor, but i wasn't making bailiff money. I've run the GRNDL combo before and while it's great burst econ, it just doesn't feel like enough. I like being able to bluff agenda's and bait clots with it, but you're screwed if they trash them from R&D. This also makes me wonder if 3 dedication is really needed as it can feel somewhat dead.

Mumbad is SO expensive so fast, but with money it's godly. Putting it behind a firewall, then mathing out their run + trash cost, and then mathing it again after you shift counters so they can't is brutal.

Third clot sucks. I got unlucky with late cyberdex's but even if you hit it early it's very easy, for shaper especially, to just keep clot as a constant threat. With clot on the field it becomes apparent just how much of the deck is dedicated to the combo, and feels a lot less scary. I could install over the mumbad, but then I just felt like a hobbled standard weyland.

Finally I feel like two ToL is a LOT of influence for something that if you're going to be in Titan could be searched. Granted it's much more flexible, but it also made me very aware of how often I couldn't combo, and in that case it's very very dead.

It's janky but personally I like putting one copy of junebug in most of my weyland just because it's a nice threat, and with mumbad you can install it unadvanced, wait for them to access, and then rez it, pump it, and flatline them.

Anyways all of this is just food for thought/feedback. Only got a few games in and still felt like I was learning the deck. Your skeleton is still much more functional than mine.

If you are going for full on fast advance why not San San in the Caprice spot?

3 Archers with only 2 Hostile Takeovers and no Public Support seems like far too many. 3 MCC is also too many in my books -- very expensive to rez, and you probably can't defend multiples.

@mcpba: I've definitely thought about it, but right now, I'm leaning towards Elizabeth Mills to try to hit Wyldside.

@Eji1700: This used to be a SanSan City Grid Atlas-train deck, which probably explains the ID choice. Mostly, I'm just not quite convinced burning 6 influence on Trick of Light is worth it outside of Titan. Maybe it could work in Blue Sun, though. Having Oversight-Curtain Wall to protect the remotes seems like a good idea.

@bracketbot: I've actually tinkered with it to run two Public Support and 2 MCC, which should help in the early-game.

Thank you all for the advice!
