"Tournament Deck": Cheap Thrills - Argus Supermodernism

Laxen 584

So I took a try at my first ANR tournament (Dragon's Lair Stockholm Store Championship, 2015-03-01). I had tried an experimental build out a few times, and it had some fun tricks I wanted to try out as an unknown contender, before people knew about my love for flatlining.

The deck is (afaik) a Supermodernism deck that score agendas under the threat of a kill (or kill under the threat of scoring agendas as I prefer to see it).

It is heavily geared towards scoring fast and setting up potential kills from turn 1. Anything that deal lethal damage for as few credits as possible goes. Every server should pose a potential kill threat, and every agenda steal should force the runner to recover for the rest of the round. At least.

Notable synergies and card choices

Snare! + Dedicated Response Team. Nothing new I guess but offers a potential turn one kill or hand discard and can add up with other damage sources later on.

Neural Katana + The Twins. How this deck originated. Another potential turn 1 kill together with click/Beanstalk/Hedge for cash. It's not that likely to happen, but the threat of it is sometimes almost as good.

Actually, The Twins in general is pretty fun. Neural Katana for 6 damage is crazy fun, but also a second trace with Hunter can be a game winner if False Lead is scored and though Checkpoint won't kill the runner it often will be enough for the runner to jack out. Not saying it's a great card - just fun.

1x Project Junebug. The Last influence spent. Really wanted a trap to be able to make advanced agendas pose some sort of threat to players that had already seen the deck.

Also, fk Jackson. I hate this guy always stealing 3 influence. Not this time. I don't intend the game to go on for too long anyway and I don't need too many cards setup to start scoring. (Yes, yes, I'm bad.)

ICE

ICE is just cheap ETR to actually protect something early, or something that rough runners up. In threes of course for Twins. 1x Archer is nothing new I suppose - can really turn a game around.

Checkpoint was really unsure about this one for a long time, but so far I like it. Scares many runners of and is tough as hell to break. The bad pub is a bummer, but hopefully game ends fast enough for it not to matter. Also, if a Cleaners is scored (Checkpoint can actually protect Cleaners quite well with the fear of Cleaners being a Junebug or for a Dedicated Response Team being ready in another server to kill the runner if it is an agenda), its damage really start being brutal.

Agendas

Project Atlas is a 3/2. Incredibly important for fast scoring. I just wish there were more of those. Occasionally good for finding a SEA Source or Scorched Earth to, you know, kill runners.

The Cleaners if there ever is a window to score one of these - do it. Makes the Identity so much more powerful and many other cards in the deck as well. Also it's 3 points. Able to score it surprisingly often early actually since my runners tend to be careful early (well, not based on a ton of games).

NAPD Contract is just a way to slow down a runner trying to rush me. Not splendid due to lots of bad pub in deck.

False Lead Actually, this Agenda is super-solid in this deck. One of these scored, and the runner will have to think very carefully before doing just about anything on click 2 and forward since a single tag potentially means ending the turn with a tag. Against Scorched.

Hostile Takeover Early cash or quick finisher. Love it.

Last words

It's fun. Probably bad. Went 3-2 in the tournament, which doesn't say much - but I'm fine with that since at least 2 kills were flatlines. Also it's fast, which is good to avoid tournament fatigue.

What this deck would really need is probably another 3/2 Agenda to keep up speed. Having to score 3/1s usually come with some neat tricks, but it doesn't always put enough pressure on the runner.

Thanks for reading. All feedback welcome :)

2 NAPDs is a deck with 3 Checkpoints and 2 Hostiles seems like kinda a bad idea. Agendas that are hard for the runner to score are great, but making them hard for you to score too makes them far less appealing.

I totally agree :P What would you replace it with?

As I see it, that card is so strong as is, it's kinda better than other 2 pointers available since it always slows the runner down. The to me viable options are Geothermal Fracking and Private Security Force which are about as slow to score. And while their abilities are great, they aren't really as reliable as the NAPD (I didn't get to try Fracking out though, so might go for that instead though I theoretically prefer to keep the runner poor with this deck rather than to boost my own endgame economics).

Have you thought about Wormhole in this? I really like Wormhole in any deck that runs Neural Katana.

@wedgeex Wormhole is a great idea. I love that card, but I cut it out early as I made a decision not to run other space ice - and having only wormhole would let my opponent's know when an unrezzed card probably was a Wormholme (or possibly an Ice Wall pretending to be a Wormhole).

I should try putting 3x back in though just to try it out. Might work better than I think :) It's, as you said, a great mid-game killer along with Twins and Katana, which I like since it is the core concept of the deck after all!

Maybe cut the two NAPD for a third cleaners and a third False Lead? I'm also a big fan of Posted Bounty in any deck that plays Scorched.

@Oisin: That Sir, is an excellent idea! Though I think I do prefer Cleaners + Takeover to be able to have that last fast scoring point more often when needed.

Thanks for the input : )

See, I'd think just one Private Security Force and one The Cleaners plus a single tag being a win condition in 99% of cases would be a compelling enough reason to keep it PSF around. Definitely more compelling than NAPD Contract, even though with your Id you want agendas stolen. As a singleton I think PSF has a lot of promise in any Argus deck.

@FarCryFromHuman: Ye, maybe I should give PSF a chance long time since I did. (Problem I saw was that when it and Cleaners was scored, you were already at 5 and could start going for a "real" win.) Did some thinking, and I'm not sure 3x The Cleaners is what I want since it can give the Runner way too much points too fast. I'm considering swapping the 2x NAPD for 1x PSF +1x each of the 1 pointers (or maybe just strt with 2x PSF to try them out more reliably until I make up my mind).

Gosh, I just wish there was another 3/2 for Wayland!

Thanks for the ideas
