Random ID Deck - Week 2 - Runner

MrFiver 7

My girlfriend and I started playing a weekly game with randomly drawn corp and runner ID's to force ourselves to try new things. This is my week 2 runner deck with The Professor: Keeper of Knowledge.

I played against a man at a store once who annihilated me with his The Professor: Keeper of Knowledge deck. He just sat on some hardware and three copies of Self-modifying Code and could get past any defense I could throw up. My goal was to recreate that hyper-versatility. It's probably a very "vanilla" deck, as far as this ID goes but to start I think it will work. I'm currently a little concerned about economy but between 3 copies of Sure Gamble, Magnum Opus, and Professional Contacts I think I'll be alright.

I love it, and don't think it's very vanilla at all, tbh. :) I play a similar sort of Prof deck...I just don't use Modded, Escher, the same console or the insane virus suite that you do. It kinda reminds me of a combination between Peekay's beloved "Vivat Academia" deck, and the one I've been trying out recently with the Dog breakers and such. I'd love to see this in action though. Do you play on OCTGN at all?

@esutter479
Thanks! I'm curious what you use in place of those few cards, particularly Escher. I kind of threw it in on a whim and haven't used it yet but I wanted to try something new. Maybe it will come up in my rematch game tonight or tomorrow. Depending on how my next match goes I'm going to consider a few other tweaks as well (scale down viruses? buff econ?) but I would love to hear how you run your deck in the mean time.

Also, you're right in that I was a little bit inspired by "Vivat Academia". However, I didn't list it as such in the deck description because I read through about a dozen popular or recent decks with this ID before making mine and that was just one of them.

Finally, I'm not on OCTGN at all. I'm pretty sure if I started up I'd just never get anything done. :P

I decided on using Diesel to provide some "rifling" instead of Modded. While I do love Modded, this particular Professor deck that I've been using (with good success) doesn't contain cards that "break the bank", so to speak. The only real expensive option is Femme, and that's almost always going to be used via the Test Run/Scavenge combo. :)

Escher is quite an interesting card, but when I used my (95% similar) version of Vivat Academia, I would either never draw it, or I'd never be able to make it through to HQ in order to get use out of it. Maybe that's just my misfortune, but it turned me off to the card a bit, sadly. I thought that an additional money option, Day Job, would be a nice splash as my 1-of event. It's relatively potent for a 1 influence card, IMO...and if/when I have a free turn after a steal/score, I can plop it down and be back in the money/running again!

I have been using Astrolabe as my console, cuz you just never know when you're gonna get a Corp opponent who's all about the shell game...and it's cheap, provides needed memory, and can help you keep speed with pesky NEH or PE/RP decks that rely on playing that mind game with you. Toolbox is great, but again, I felt the need to try out a less expensive option.

It's funny...at my job, I've been given the title and responsibilities of what's known as "Lean Captain" in my department/shift. What that basically means, is that I have to look for ways to get the department to use its resources as best it can, while at the same time cutting down on waste (time, money, space, etc.). I've sort of subconsciously been applying that concept to my Netrunner decks, heh.

I went ahead and posted my Professor if you want to give it a look-see - netrunnerdb.com

Enjoy, and keep me posted as to how your radical virus setup performs! :)

@esutter479 I could see the deck benefitting from a slimmed-down profile as far as cost goes. At the same time though, I really was glad for my copy of Morning Star on the inaugural game so I want to play around see some more. Diesel hardly seems like a bad trade though because Diesel just about always feels good to me.

If I do go in for cheaper cards, Astrolabe would totally be my console. I thought about throwing it in but having never played The Professor: Keeper of Knowledge before, I opted for a more "traditional" deck build. Again, I might change it.

As for your job, if you're speaking of "lean" in a manufacturing sense, I know exactly what you mean for I am a mechanical engineer by trade! I'm kind of curious to know more about your job now... (I hope that doesn't qualify me as a creeper/stalker.)

Not at all sir, not at all. :) My job isn't glamorous, to be sure. I was hired as an order picker (pick-to-light) at the Walgreens distribution center in CT. Basically, our job is to make sure the stores get the right product in the right proportion, as well as in one piece.

When I first started, our management was severely lacking in communication and interaction in general with the team members (employees). We've since experienced a myriad of changes in personnel, with the M.O. of bringing back the concept of "lean" to the building and everyone who works in it.

I decided that I knew enough about my department and its people, that when my manager spoke to the team about appointing someone as Lean Captain, I spoke up, and for the first time in my working life, I didn't feel like I was being rejected by those in charge. So yah...it's been an interesting ride so far, and I'm looking forward to being able to help my people and my company succeed in their goals. :)

As for the Professor...I can understand you wanting a build more along the beaten path. Peekay's deck is surely the measuring stick that everyone should look to in order to assure themselves of having success in competitive play, IMO. I took his idea (+1 D4v1d) to a store championship about 5 months ago and took first place. I certainly wasn't expecting that sort of success, even though I WAS confident in my ability to play Professor effectively.

I really like Morning Star, and it was in my tourney winning version...though, admittedly, it really didn't play much of a factor in me winning...especially in the final round, heh. D4v1d and Faerie were my heroes, along with Scavenge and Clone Chip being used to recycle the little beasts back into play. :D
