Noise: Uncommon Cold (WiP)

Djaris 18

This is my attempt to put together a runner deck that I'm excited to play. I finally found my groove with a Corp deck, and after trying to make Apex work, and then trying MaxX, then putting Noise in charge of my MaxX deck and trying again, I felt like it was starting to click. So here's this. It's a thing.

It's sort of a take on some other Noise decks I had seen around, but with MKUltra out I was wondering if the net gain of a cred for trashing MKUltra over and over with Aesop's Pawnshop would be worth it. Get a Wasteland out and that'll increase yields which is pretty neat. I don't own Chakana or Cache yet, or they'd be in here... one day. But for now. Day Job and Aesop are powering econ, Inject and I've had worse are powering my card draw, with a chance to yank a reaver here an there. Thought about a Chop Bot 3000. Still thinking about it. Forgo the Aesop if you don't need the cred, and chop away a tag or get an extra card draw.

The programs are a wide array of chaotic mess. Djinn help get viruses in hand. Specifically Darwin which wants to be a primary breaker (save for if there's an AI buster in the Ice field), Gorman Drip v1 provides late game econ boost, Hivemind and Virus Breeding Ground keep Darwin boosted up after purges, Deep Thought, Medium and Gravedigger make it so I can hopefully put choice cards in the archives, and the Breaker Suite is more about using Darwin and Crypsis as virus breakers for more R&D Trash. Datasucker and Parasite help get around pesky crap, and Virus Breeding Ground can potentially super charge a Parasite to take out a pesky Ice that's too costly to deal with more quickly.

All in all, it's sort of like a solitaire deck but without the solitaire. Get stuff in archives, make them have to protect it, run it anyways. I really like the idea of trashing Black Orchestra or MKUltra for profit or memory space when needed.

Again. Card selection is a little limited. I haven't had the chance to play it yet, but looking for potential sage advice from other Noise Players? Are the reaver and wasteland adds totally useless use of influnce? Am I woefully short on econ?

The biggest issue I see with this deck is consistency. I worry that you are going to have some draws where you are desperately clicking for credits or drawing cards because you aren't finding the cards that make your deck hum. Noise really really wants to be churning through the stack for new viruses to install, so if the draw engine isn't working, that's a problem.

I don't hate the Reaver. If you have an Aesop's Pawnshop, Reaver is exactly what this deck wants. It's a little steep on influence of course so cutting it might open your deck up to new options. I worry though... the speed at which your deck operates seems like it would be night and day different depending on whether you draw you get Aesop's/Reaver set up. And you only have one Reaver in the deck and no way to search for it. That kind of inconsistency isn't wonderful.

Wasteland seems a little greedy to me... depending on how consistently the deck plays, it might be better as a third Aesop's (which, understandably, you might not have right now), one half of a second Reaver, or some other card entirely. I haven't tried it in Noise so maybe it is better than I am giving it credit for, but to me it seems only good when you have what you need already.

You don't seem to have a great way to break barriers. An accident? I imagine you have either Paperclip or Corroder, right? Wraparound might really be a problem without one.

I understand that card selection is limited, but here are some suggestions of cards that might make the deck more consistent:

As for cuts, those can be hard to identify, but my instincts might be:

  • 1-2 Djinn
  • Deep Thought (the interaction you mentioned is cute, but it seems like it is only going to come up most games. Probably better just to reclaim two influence and embrace Noise's randomness)
  • Crypsis
  • Maybe cyberfeeders? They are definitely a good card for you though, but if you end up slotting in different econ + card draw, this might be useful

Deck looks fun. Certainly, I would peruse some of the previously published Noise lists on here for ideas. People haven't really been cooking with Noise much lately, but that doesn't mean the old ideas were bad!

I can do the wildside, and can drop Paperclip or Corroder in (though I had left paperclip out as a net loss on my aesop/heap install trick). The others I don't have just yet, and they're (of course) spread out from hell to breakfast in data packs. Cache is at the top of my list just yet, as it's great econ- you can install to R&D discard, get an extra Virus Counter with Grimoire out, and trash it to get 3 more on the turn it runs out. Since there's no click there, it's a virus that can give me 3-7 credits right quick, and more if I want to discard Hive Mind counters as well... What about my Chop-Bot inclination? Is there anything there? Maybe if I lose reaver, I can replace the cards with Chop Bots to get the draw back? (Instead of Aesop on a turn when I need cards instead of money etc etc). Crypsis is on the low end of cards I care about. I like that Djinn can search for him, but 9/10 why would I do that over a darwin? If I've got a breeding ground, he's still sort of pumpable, or a Hive Mind or something to increase his strength... And with Paperclip, MKU, and BOrch hanging around, I have other answers to ice. I could drop the deep thoughts, and the wasteland and go after a second reaver for more consistency...?

@Djaris I think you are on the right track. Paperclip isn't the best to do Aesops/Heap tricks with, but it is preeeetty good at getting through barriers. I know you want to do shenanigans, but I don't want you to be sweating bullets because someone rezzed a Vanilla. I know you have some answers to think from AI breakers, but I worry about how taxing barriers are going to be for you, especially when you have wonderful fracters in faction.

Chop Bot 3000 is a good card and is making waves in Apex, but I think that's mostly because Apex can't play Aesop's Pawnshop. Aesop's is so much more efficient most of the time than lil' choppy. You could experiment with Chop Bot, but if you were going to do so, I would definitely not cut the Reaver. Chop Bot is kind of inefficient unless you are using its ability to detag.

Play the deck, and just be mindful of how well you are cycling through your deck, whether you have enough money, and know that you have options to fix those problems when you identify them.

Good luck!
