We're putting Mammoths in the Government! (Throwback Ampere)

Pros of playing Ampere in throwback:

  • It's the only constructed format where you can play Government Takeover + Regenesis except Eternal (where it's probably too fair most of the time.
  • Your opponents will have no clue what on earth you're doing, and have to respect every card ever printed as a potential threat. (Failing that, every scary card ever rotated.)
  • If my record is any indication you'll go 2-1
  • Whenever anyone asks what your throwback card is, you can give a different answer.

(For reference, cards I said I was playing included:

Cons of playing Ampere in throwback:

  • You might feel a fraction of a second of remorse after letting a Noise player into an archives which only has Government Takeover in before you punitive them. Don't worry! This is normal and will fade quickly.

Ok no but what does the deck actually do and how on earth does that work?

The gameplan is simple. Put Government Takeover in archives via any non-suspicious method you like, then score Regenesis. Sometimes you can just never advance it, but you also have a few fast advance options. This works because people who don't know have no reason to check archives, and people that do can't do it consistently - in testing this deck had a good win rate even against the rest of my team who knew exactly what it was doing, simply because being Ampere gives you so many routes to pull it off. Your fallback plan is either Punitive Counterstrike or scoring one of your 5/3s fairly, then regenesis another.

The earliest it's ever won is turn 3 in testing - I go wide with money assets and sneak a holo man on board, while my opponent installs the Nihilist, start of her turn 2 I take the mill, see the GT hit the bin and the Regenesis in hand, do not react, archives is untouched as is HQ and the unrezzed holo man, start of turn 3 I rez the holo man, FA regenesis, and add the GT to my score area for the win. This deck requires a lot of blind confidence, and sometimes the willingness to put a Government Takeover in the bin protected by nothing but faith and your unshakeable facade. It's an absolute blast to play, and getting to pull it off round 1 was the moment I decided the whole trip was worth it. The next few days then proceeded to blow even that joy out of the water, but here's not the writeup for that :p
