Project CROW 5

Welcome to the fifth iteration of the Project CROW mini-campaign for beginners familiar with System Gateway and System Update 2021. It consists of a set of duel decks that are upgraded over three stages. We start at the first stage mainly with cards from System Gateway + System Update 2021, but introduce a few key cards from the Standard pool (see here for further information on the tournament formats Startup and Standard). At stage 2, we open up the card pool to the Startup format, but also add some more necessary Standard cards to teach some further elements. Stage 3 are the two decks Frog off, Keeling! and Calibrating...TUCANA! that @percomis and myself brought to the 2023 EMEA Continentals placing 16th and 30th respectively (out of a total of 145 players).

New cards

We start with a basic Tāo list. Cards from outside the System Gateway + System Update card pool are:

  • Self-modifying Code - The biggest upgrade to Shaper coming from System Gateway + System Update. This tutors your breakers at instant-speed, which means that you can wait to decide which of them you need until the Corp rezzes something that needs taking care of. Combine it with Overclock to install your breakers for very cheap!
  • Pichação - A fun tool to put on ice in key moments. Combined with Conduit and Pantograph it can create some very deep R&D digs, where you keep reinstalling Pichação over and over again.
  • Daily Casts - A reprint in Ashes of an FFG classic. Basically always worth the install.

Description

This is a pretty basic Shaper build. Fetch your breakers with Self-modifying Code when you need them. Make money with your various economy options and break into servers.

Be aware that the Corp is on a fast advance plan and the game might be over quicker than you'd like!

Overview lists

These links show you all the necessary cards to build all three stages of the lists and give dedicated in/out lists for each stage transition.

I really love that endeavor for teaching Netrunner.

About the breakers (which are 1x), to make teaching simple, could a Slap Vandal replace a Pichação, allowing a kind of Boomerang that synergize with Self-modifying Code?

Also, was Matryoshka considered, since it is easy to get it early and break anything? It would free the slot taken by DZMZ Optimizer (along with the breakers, a Pichação and a Self-modifying Code).

I hope this project sees more limelight, as it is an important tool to bring in new players.

Cheers!

For the CROW decks, I want to achieve similar play patterns using other cards. I considered Matryoshka for that "one size fits all" breaking solution or moving over to Kit, but in the end decided to keep it safe and simple for stage 1 with just the normal breaker suite + Self-modifying Code.

With Slap Vandal or Boomerang, I'd need to introduce a card just to cut it later as they were not part of the final decks. This is something I'm trying to avoid as much as possible.

A friend and I have just played a CROW 5 - 1 game. We're both quite new to the game, and the decks are fantastic for this. Thanks a lot for putting this together.

In the game, I made a careless run which resulted in Ballista trashing my only Corroder. This deck has no way to bring it back, and so this could have been an easy win for the corp. From the next iteration onwards, the decks have Simulchip, so this is no longer a problem. But for the first deck, it's a potential stumbling block to be aware of.
