I wasn’t very excited about store champs beginning in the same meta as I’d been practicing in for worlds four months ago. However, I continued to enjoy my spin on reg Val which I’ve been tinkering with since rotation was announced so thought I’d take it over the probably stronger Hayley builds that have been going around.

My most obvious transgression from orthodoxy is choosing Employee Strike as my restricted card. I’ve tested Film Critic (with hacktivist in the current slots) and found it a little underwhelming. Eating net damage that jinteki demands has rarely been a problem and Femme gives me an acceptable answer to Data Raven protecting Quantum Predictives.

Employee strike has proved strong against CTM, Aginfusion and Brain Rewiring CI. It is also incidentally strong against outliers like Titan (preventing atlas tokens) or Skorp (in combination with the conspiracy breakers). The latter of these was very relevant as I faced that dastardly Skorp Corp three times on the day.

Most of the rest of the deck is standard anarch good stuff but here’s the thinking behind the spice:

Test Run

At 50 cards you can find yourself gearchecked somewhat frequently. Test Run (particularly in combination with femme) answers this nicely. It’s also an extremely fast and affordable answer to mythic ice for a crucial run. Added to that, it’s ability to recur Femme, D4v1d or Imp is really handy. The same but less so is true of retrieval run and both are flexible supported by Same Old Thing.

Femme Fatale

Femme provides an answer to Data Raven, Mythic and generally annoying ICE in a single card for a single point of influence. I found Aumakua slow and vulnerable to lock-out when you need it most. The prevalence of IP Block sold me on abandoning AI breakers when CTM was popular and I’ve not really looked back.

Turntable

The deck doesn’t really need the MU but the ability on Turntable is rarely irrelevant these days. Almost every competitive corp deck is running mixed agenda values, agenda with relevant counters, or both.

Imp

Imp is my pseudo Film Critic, added at the eleventh hour, shortly before leaving for the pub. Even with it my one runner loss of the day was to CI Moons, supported by Lakshmi, but it did feature in my favourite runner play of the day.

Favourite Play

I faced Skorp Corp in round three and my opponent installed an unprotected and unadvanced card. I realised it was a Standoff intended to enable Hunter Seeker. An Imp token sent it to the bin and I ended the game surprise-swapping it for an Oaktown using Turntable.

Thanks to all my opponents for being nice and letting me win and to Johno for designing cobr.ai which was excellent.

Boo to Steve for micromanaging when I was allowed to have fun and Matt for threatening me with physical violence.

As your Fun Tyrant for the day, it was important to make sure you had the same amount of fun as everyone else.

Doesn't Titan get around Employee strike? When they score an agenda, the current goes away.

16 Jan 2018 Saan

@ChairmanHiro Yes, but the order of turn effects on the Corp's turn starts with their effects in the order of their choosing (gain a counter) and then goes onto the runner's effects in the order of their choosing (Emp Strike goes away). At the time of the counter gain, Emp Strike is still in play.

16 Jan 2018 emilyspine

@ChairmanHirothe current gets trashed, but the agenda that trashed it doesn't get a counter when scored (same reason Skorp can't remove strike from the game, and Sol can't play a current if they score when Strike is up)

@Seamusnumerous people have told me FC is the only correct choice, plz explain how you won when you are technically wrong and also how I can achieve this.

If Titan's ID is blank when the agenda is scored, it doesn't meet its trigger condition even if empstrike is trashed right away.

@emilyspine Yeah, probably? The only use for Critic that I feel the deck misses is an answer to Lakshmi. Everything else is manageable, and I’ve got used to the strikes. If I was expecting a lot of Moons CI I’d strongly consider switching but in all other circumstances strikes are cool and flexible while Critic just stops you taking four net damage to the face. You have 50 cards! You can spare a few.

With Critic I almost certainly would have beaten the one CI Moons I played. Without Employee Strike I probably would have lost at least one of my Skorp games and maybe the Titan one.

To replicate my success follow these simple steps:

1 - Go to the pub the evening before the tournament, not to return before 1am nor without chips, cheese and garlic sauce.

2 - Have a hearty breakfast of four cigarettes and two apples.

3 - Already have implanted post-hypnotic suggestions in the minds of the TO and your opponents to let you win. This step requires a little preparation.

I thoughts eggs in some form were important to breakfast?

@Seamusguess I picked the wrong week to quit smoking

16 Jan 2018 Seamus

They’re all bad weeks. They’re all bad weeks.

16 Jan 2018 Tolaasin

sneaky thing about test run is also that femming the ice to steal an agenda puts it back on stack and not accessible to hunter seeker - as I found to my cost last week!

16 Jan 2018 Seamus

@Tolaasin I found out to my cost that Underway Rennovation is a solid response to that.

@Seamus, how do you deal with tags? I don't see a way, that you could prevent being tagged and then getting a BOOM!, Closed Accounts and many other unpleasant things

17 Jan 2018 hornedrat

@Seamus, how to you deal with tags? It seems to me, that it would be easy for a corp to tag, and then do many unpleasant things

@hornedrats Tagging just isn’t very prevalent right now. With the econ package and employee strike you crush CTM, manually clearing the few tags you take.

Similarly, you beat Gagarin by killing their board so they never achieve the money required to try and tag you.

The only other deck I can think of attempting to tag is CI Boom and that’s at best the third or fourth most effective CI deck so just money up and steal their agenda before they can kill you.

22 Jan 2018 brightknight216

Please pardon my ignorance. But why do you feel that Film Critic is a better card to play against CI Moon?

Please pardon my ignorance. But why do you feel that Film Critic is a better card to deal with CI Moon?

22 Jan 2018 Seamus

@brightknight216 They frequently rely on scoring using Lakshmi Smartfabrics, or use it to protect agenda they will score from hand. Film Critic hard-counters this while Imp just sends the agenda to the bin. If you can’t get into archives or they're able to recur the agenda or even just keep Lakshmi-ing it that’s bad times for you.

@Seamus I took down 2 store championships with this deck (paired with CI brains for one and CTM with Echoes for the second) this last weekend. Thanks for making an amazing list. I think it's the best runner deck in the game right now. Cheers!

Seamus is getting a bit OP. Time to at least put him on the Restricted List.

28 Jan 2018 Krasty

Thanks for this build @Seamus ! With directly this decklist I won SC tournament in Vienna... :o) Very good build you made!

28 Jan 2018 Krasty

... and btw

1. I also was in pub night before (and lost almost all games there!)

2. my breakfast was just two cigarets...

3. now I feel like I have implanted something in my brain... but dunno what.. :o)

29 Jan 2018 Longi

Hi, would you consider ditching I´ve had worse for Making the entrance in order to get faster to cards you need?

29 Jan 2018 Seamus

@Krasty congratulations! Good breakfast. This is the key to success.

@Longi I haven’t considered it. I think you want the raw draw more. Also, there’s enough net damage in the meta that you get a reasonable number of free triggers which is obviously excellent.
