Big Hand Fast Frog: Best Shaper at Australian Nats - West

Prep

I knew I wanted to play Ari at Nats when she was released, but it took many test games to work out how to make her go fast. Turns out the answer is robot hands (thanks Testrunning). Panto really goes nyoom - it does more stuff than LilyPAD, you can afford it sooner, and it fires multiple times per turn. I'd also just received 5 stitches in my meat hand from a broken jar, so playing robot hands felt right.

Slots

  • Q-Loop: my favourite card, it's like grease. It allowed me to play and pop Enviro Testing with 1min left on the clock, providing cash for the winning conduit dig.
  • Hush: 2 is right. Eases the load on simulchip and makes ice manageable.
  • Urban Art Vernissage: 2 felt "good enough". I go back and forward on having 3 to play it earlier vs the dead draw of extra copies.
  • Slap Vandal: I put 2 in for early aggro but I want to drop them. There's too much punishing multi-sub ice and it rarely feels safe to facecheck with one of these.
  • T400: the MU matters and +1 hand size is great! It buys another turn vs keeling, protects against a bacterial double punitive, and is handy for Ari.
  • Some HQ multi-access would be great

Event

Round 1: Win against HaverOfFun on Restoring Humanity Bacterial Murder.

Round 2: Bizarro long game vs Joe on PD Fast Advance. I found 6 points sitting on R&D in the first few turns, and then... managed to get locked out in an agonisingly long game, leaving us only 8 minutes for corp.

Round 3: Win vs Andrew on NEH. With barely any ice except a hushed Virtual Service Agent, I was free to burgle a flooded HQ.

Round 4: Win vs Inactivist on prison AgInfusion Keeling. I sniped Keeling off R&D early, buying time to set up T400 and steal a few agendas from HQ, then conduit a win.

This left me 3-1 as runner and won the best shaper pin!

For corp I piloted (Santa's Workshop)[https://netrunnerdb.com/en/decklist/342c6c07-1b28-4ed1-aeff-b859f2a212eb/1st-apac-santa-s-workshop-swiss-7-0-cut-3-1-] to a dreadful 1-3 finish, coming 8th overall.

Thanks

  • Jinglis93 and Null Signal for making WA Nats happen!
  • Inactivist for being my long-time Netrunner buddy, trekking all the way from Sydney to play, and convincing me to eat that awful spicy chicken wing
  • Joe for amping up the hype and also being dumb enough to eat one of those wings
  • Dan and Steph for being super fun people and braving the Standard Meta after mostly playing Startup
  • David for winning the whole thing with a deck full of "objectively bad" cards by ...facechecking Anansis!? Wizard

@grombatmole which cards are considered "bad" in David's deck? This would allow me to iterate the deck. I wish I had seen the Anansi facecheck. Congratulation on being the best shaper and for all your wins.

Cheers!

@Diogene thanks! The facecheck(s) were glorious - I think one in swiss(?) resulted in a kill but after that they were deliberate, calculated risks which absolutely paid off.

“Bad cards” is a reference to a discussion Joe and I had about how Friday Chip is fun and we like it but would never bring it to an event. And then Behold, there it is with Airblade (another card I’ve never seen used) absolutely crushing AgInfusion Keeling! Those cards work great in your deck. The only one I’m still unsure about is Nga, which I’ve found a bit slow in Esa, but in the finals all 3 got eaten by that Anansi so I didn’t see it in action.

@grombatmole I'm wondering if Solidarity Badge could replace Nga. AirbladeX (JSRF Ed.) is my favorite runner card in the new set, because if synergize well with Tsakhia "Bankhar" Gantulga, allow you to survive Jinteki decks (especially Jinteki: Personal Evolution) and avoid encounter effects from NBN ices.

Knobkierie could be better and would replace Hermes and Friday Chip, but it felt like Hermes could have a bigger impact on the game when found early (how did it perform on the day?). The idea was that Nga kind of replace Maw and Friday Chip kind of replace Knobkierie. I'm glad the deck, piloted expertly by David, was able to crush AgInfusion Keeling, because it can be a very tough matchup.

Cheers!

@Diogene all good thoughts. Solidarity badge Hannah "Wheels" Pilintra were both cards that I thought of for the tag matchup, maybe freeing some influence from Free Lunch.

I think I prefer Hermes+Friday to Knob - you don’t need the extra Knob MU and it is very pricey to install. Plus Hermes helps reduce the strain on Audrey and buy you time to set up.

Unsurprisingly, I like this list. T400 is interesting, as you often dont get DZMZ value with Kyuban, Ika, SMC or late game when you have more UAV credits than you need.

I was also wondering about playing DreamNet, but didnt have time to test it anymore. How did it feel?

Very late response but dreamnet was great, sad to see it go as Ari really wants her draw
